For many years in my 30’s and 40’s I had major back pain including sciatica. Some days it would be all I could do to move from bed to the kitchen or bathroom. It would last anywhere from a day or two to a few months. I seldom sought medical help. It didn’t seem to be anything a doctor was able to do much about. At the time I was living an hour from the nearest doctor. It was excruciating to contemplate a ride in the car partly on gravel roads to get to a physician who would do little more than prescribe a muscle relaxer and pain medicine. I learned how to work with it myself but it seriously impacted my life.
When I attended massage school one of my biggest fears was that my back would not be strong enough to take the physical demand of the job. I was blessed that I attended Becky Jackson’s school for several reasons. She required that we worked with the table at a higher level than most schools so there was no need to bend over for long periods. She also based many of her movements on Creative Healing which were gentle and effective.
I began my 500 hour curriculum two weeks later than the rest of the students and to make up the hours I lacked I attended the Creative Healing class that was in progress and got be the ‘body’ for one of the students. As luck would have it the students were learning the sciatic treatment. I sat on the bench and was worked on for an entire weekend by different people. I could feel the pressure lifting from my contracted spine as the students worked up the vertebrae from the sacrum.
I’m not going to say my sciatica was cured on that weekend. I can say however that I have not had an extreme case since then. When my back starts to spasm I now know what needs to be done. You may or may not know what it feels like to be empowered by a previous limitation you had no control over.
I think one of the reasons I am able to perform the sciatic treatment so well is that I know exactly what the person feels like in their pain and I am committed to providing them the relief I myself have been able to get from Stephenson’s Creative Healing. I do not know how many times I’ve done this treatment on clients over the past 15 years. Generally they only need come in for 2 or 3 sessions. Sometimes I see someone on a monthly basis for prevention. Other times I see the person one time and they are able to go on with their lives until the next episode. A few hundred sessions I’m guessing. Not counting the students I have for this work where I may have as many as 18 in a weekend class.
The work can be challenging and takes a keen sense of awareness when the client is in a great deal of pain. Careful adherence to the steps of the Creative Healing treatment helps to determine if the client has true sciatica or piriformis syndrome or some other muscle spasm pinching the nerve. The psoas is a common culprit causing back pain.
