Stephenson’s Creative Healing is a gentle hands on work using natural oils as a lubricant and a specific pattern of movements to encourage change in the body. I have used these abdominal treatments for a wide variety of issues and I don’t believe we as massage therapists as a whole work on the abdomen often enough. Perhaps I am just thinking of my own practice, as I have a tendency to spend extra time on head, neck and shoulders and then find I have less time than I’d like to complete the legs and back and so skip the abdomen all together. It is one of those areas some people hesitate to have a therapist work on. If you think about it where is a lot of stress held in the body? If we perhaps relaxed the abdomen would the shoulders have more of an inclination to drop? If we were able to get the diaphragm, psoas, oblique’s and rectus abdominus a bit more relaxed, how would the lower back feel? What would happen to the shoulders?
On of my favorite things to demonstrate in my Honoring the Belly class is how 2 certain reflex areas for the abdomen make a nearly immediate difference in how tight the shoulders are. When those upper trapezius muscles just won’t let go for me easily I usually work on the client’s abdomen.
A new client may look at me weird but no one has ever refused to let me try and I can’t think of the last time when it wasn’t effective. ‘Stubborn traps’ seem to be caught in the belly and knowing how to perform a light effleurage in a certain area is a great tool to have in your massage repertoire.
Of course abdominal massage is wonderful for your prenatal clients also and we will be covering all of the digestive tune-up applications from Creative Healing that Dr. Gowri Motha uses in her “Gentle Birth Method programme” She writes: ” The pancreatic treatment has been found to be excellent in improving digestive function as well as insulin and other hormones, the pancreas secretes important enzymes to help with the digestion of food. The symptoms in pregnancy associated with the digestive system – such as nausea, heartburn, abdominal bloating and constipation – have been reported to improve after a pancreatic treatment. in the programme, it is recommended at 32 weeks to prevent gestational diabetes from developing, as the placental hormones might suppress insulin response at this time.”
Dr. Motha continues “Liver: This is very helpful in early pregnancy when many mothers suffer from nausea and vomiting. Often , these symptoms are related to high levels of circulating tissue toxins that clog up the liver and slow down its detoxification mechanism. A liver treatment can clear these symptoms. This treatment is usually carried out at set times throughout pregnancy.” Dr. Motha has been using Stephenson’s Creative Healing with her prenatal clients in London since she began her programme of natural birth around the same time I graduated massage school in 1999. When she wrote her book in 2004 she had used Creative Healing with all of her 1200 prenatal clients. I am offering this class in Fayetteville. If you would like the basic Honoring the Belly class we’ll meet from 9AM – 3:00PM on Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $225.00 and the class is ADoH and NCBTMB approved. If you are a midwife or other health care professional who would like to take the class, call or email me for more information.
