Joseph B. Stephenson was an intuitive healer born in northern England in the late 1800’s. He moved to Pennsylvannia in the 1910’s and after 30 years retired to southern California. He worked with many people with nearly every ailment during his practice and later shared his work with two people who would become the teachers who began to share it with the world.
I had no idea when I learned this work that it would change how I perceived the body and change the way I would work with my clients forever.
I have been teaching Stephenson’s method since 2000 after I learned it from Rebecca A. Jackson who owned the Northwest Arkansas School of Massage in Fayetteville, AR.
Today there are several instructors who are sharing this work and teaching others. One is Dr. Gowri Motha ObGyn who learned the female treatments in the early 1990’s and incorporated it into her ‘Gentle Birth Method Program’. She has been teaching it to her prenatal staff as well as other Gentle Birth Method practitioners all over Europe ever since. I traveled to London with Becky to teach a Creative Healing class in 2004.
So what is Creative Healing?
Its a hands on body work that traditionally uses olive oil as a lubricant and 4 basic principals which are both physical and uses your ‘Creative Mind’, as Mr. Stephenson called it. Creative Healing is not something that can be performed effectively without a therapist’s full attention to the process. I really like this part and its easy to think of it as a moving meditation in some ways but it involves two people rather than just one.
The original text describes over 200 special applications of his basic tenants and I commonly use it for headaches, sinus issues, low back pain, elbow pain, digestive issues and anxiety.
